The Chimbetus of song will unite this Sunday at Harare’s Steak House to commemorate the life of Naison Chimbetu, a founding father of dendera music.
Allan, Suluman, Tryson, Douglas, and Saiwe, will perform with a single band in a show sure to stir memories of the late music icon, who passed away on March 6, 2006.
Naison, along with his late brother Simon, co-created dendera under Marxist Brothers—a sub-genre of sungura—and was a significant figure in Zimbabwean music.
They later separated in the late 80s, after the formation of Orchestra Dendera Kings, with Naison forming G7 Commandos
Sunday’s gig is not the first time the Chimbetus have organised such a tribute; having previously held a successful show remembering Simon Chimbetu.
That performance memorabilia from that occasion continues to resonate with fans.
Their upcoming tribute is expected to evoke similar emotional reactions and celebrate Naison’s enduring legacy.
