FKF investigates goalkeeper Matasi over match fixing allegations

The Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) has opened an investigation into national team goalkeeper Patrick Matasi following allegations of match manipulation.

Matasi, 37, who plays for Kenyan Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz, has earned over 30 caps for the Harambee Stars.

His last international appearance was in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in October 2023.

The probe was triggered by an unverified, undated video circulating online, which appears to show Matasi agreeing to influence the outcome of a league match.

The FKF has pledged to collaborate with FIFA, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and other authorities in its investigation.

In a statement, the FKF emphasized its “zero-tolerance policy on match manipulation” and vowed to uphold the integrity of the sport.

The investigation will follow FKF and FIFA regulations, ensuring a “fair, transparent, and thorough process.”

The federation also assured that Matasi’s rights, as well as those of his club, would be respected.

Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula has defended Matasi, citing the goalkeeper’s strong performances—including three consecutive clean sheets since joining the club last month.

“We reviewed the video and found no wrongdoing by Matasi,” Shimanyula stated.

“Videos can be misleading, and we shouldn’t trust everything we see. He will continue playing unless the FKF provides evidence of misconduct. He is innocent until proven guilty.”

The FKF is yet to announce a timeline for the investigations’ conclusion.
