Zimbabwean middle-distance runner Wayne Kabondo is gearing up to defend his title at the upcoming Mr Pace Post Insurance Marathon set for May 10.
Kabondo is determined not only to retain his crown, but also to improve his time.
He, however, bemoaned difficulties athletes face in securing sponsorship in Zimbabwe and expressed gratitude to the event’s sponsors for their support.
Now in its fourth edition, the marathon is sponsored by Zimpost and its partners—Nicoz Diamond, Global Risk Underwriting Managers (GRUMA), and ZINARA.
“Athletes need financial support, and this sponsorship is crucial, it provides us with the means to compete.
“The event has grown significantly and is now recognised by World Athletics, offering a bigger stage for athletes to showcase their talent. My focus is on defending my title and setting a new personal best.”
David Nyabadza, the chief executive of Nicoz Diamond, reaffirmed his company’s commitment to nurturing local talent.
He emphasised the importance of investing in community development and creating opportunities for youth through sports.
“The Mr Pace Post Insurance Marathon is a fantastic platform for young athletes to shine while contributing to the community.
He noted the event’s expanding reach, with participants now coming from outside Zimbabwe, and its new status as a qualifier for international competitions.
“We’re thrilled with the event’s growth, including the participation of foreign athletes. With its recognition as a qualifying race, we expect even stronger competition in the future.”
Looking ahead, Nyabadza revealed plans to increase investment in athlete development, including sponsoring promising runners to compete globally.
“Our ultimate vision is to see Zimbabwean athletes excel on the world stage, and we’re committed to making that a reality,” he added
