Motsi enjoying global wave of success

Francis Motsi has quickly become a name synonymous with determination, skill, and success in the world of college soccer.

The youthful forward’s journey from a historic championship win with Iowa Lakes Community College to earning a First Team All-Region honor at Wayland Baptist University is nothing short of inspiring.

Motsi first made headlines during the 2023/24 season when he played a pivotal role in leading Iowa Lakes Community College to their first-ever National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Championship in men’s soccer.

Under the guidance of Head Coach Ben MacRae, Motsi was a regular starter for the Lakers, serving as a key component of the team’s dynamic attack. However, his season took a dramatic turn when he suffered a potentially season-ending hamstring injury. For many athletes, such a setback could have derailed their momentum—but not for Motsi.

After just three weeks of intensive rehabilitation, Motsi defied the odds and returned to the starting lineup for the NJCAA National Championship final. His presence on the field was instrumental in securing the title for Iowa Lakes, a moment forever etched in the program’s history. Standing on the field under the bright stadium lights, Motsi proudly held the championship trophy, a symbol of his resilience and the team’s collective triumph.

“Winning that championship with Iowa Lakes was a dream come true,” Motsi reflected.

“The injury was tough, but I knew I had to get back for my team. That moment when we lifted the trophy—it made all the hard work worth it.”

Coach Ben MacRae praised Motsi’s determination, saying, “Francis showed incredible heart to come back from that injury in time for the final. His contribution to our first NJCAA title was immense, and he’s a true testament to what this program is about.”

Motsi’s standout performance didn’t go unnoticed. His talent and determination earned him a full-ride scholarship to Wayland Baptist University, a top NAIA program known for its competitive soccer team. Transitioning to the next level under Head Coach Robert Ssejjemba, Motsi wasted no time making his mark in the 2024/25 season.

He tallied an impressive 7 goals and 6 assists, showcasing his versatility as both a scorer and a playmaker.

His contributions on the field were a major factor in Wayland Baptist’s successful campaign, culminating in Motsi being named a First Team All-Region honoree—a well-deserved recognition of his impact.

The highlight of Motsi’s season came during the NCCAA Central Region Division 1 Championship, where he once again proved his clutch ability.

In the semifinals, Motsi delivered a stellar performance, scoring 2 goals and providing 1 assist to help Wayland Baptist secure the regional title.

His ability to perform under pressure has solidified his reputation as a rising star in collegiate soccer.

“Francis is a special player,” said Wayland Baptist Head Coach Robert Ssejjemba. “His work ethic, his vision on the field, and his ability to step up in big moments have been incredible to watch. He’s a leader for this team, and we’re so proud of what he’s accomplished.”

From overcoming a major injury to earning accolades at the next level, Francis Motsi’s journey is a testament to his grit and passion for the game. As he continues to shine at Wayland Baptist, the soccer world is taking notice of this young talent. With his sights set on even greater achievements, Motsi is proving that he’s not just a champion on the field—but a champion in every sense of the word.
