The Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) has hailed the upcoming Crystal Candy National Chess Tournament as a pivotal platform for nurturing the country’s next generation of chess grandmasters.
Set to take place from May 16 to 19, 2025, at Errymaple Group of Schools in Zvishavane, the event is expected to draw over 1,000 young chess prodigies from across the nation.
ZCF President Todd Mapingire said he is excited with the exposure given to youngsters.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to unleash the talent of these gifted young chess players. This tournament is more than just a competition, it’s a celebration of intellect, strategy, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.”
The tournament, organised in partnership with Crystal Candy, will follow a FIDE-rated Swiss System format, ensuring a high level of competitive play.
Among the participating schools are defending champions Dominican Convent, rural schools like Mbeure Primary School from Manicaland, and emerging forces such as Gwehava Primary from Gokwe.
Mapingire said the event’s very important, noting that past winners have gone on to represent Zimbabwe in international competitions.
“This is where future legends are made.
“The winning team won’t just take home prize, they’ll carry Zimbabwe’s flag onto the global stage,” he said.
