A CHINHOYI-BASED policewoman has appeared in court after she was arrested over the unlawful possession of ivory.
Gilda Chaziva (38) was facing charges of contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act when she appeared before Harare magistrate Winfilda Tiyatara, who remanded her out of custody to June 14 for trial.
Prosecutor Chyvonne Nhira alleged that on October 31 2022, detectives from CID Minerals Flora and Fauna, Harare received information that Chaziva was in possession of ivory in the Westgate Area of Harare looking for buyers.
The court heard that a detective who was posing as a buyer called Chaziva, who asked the detective to come to the Westgate area.
The detectives teamed up with other detectives and went to Westgate where upon arrival, Chaziva indicated that she was waiting about 300 metres after the roundabout along Lomagundi Road.
On arrival Chaziva showed the detective a white sack stashed in a nearby bush. The court heard that Chaziva opened it, and it had two elephant tusks wrapped in two bed sheets.
The detective signalled the back-up team, which reacted and arrested the accused person.
