Haig Park Primary School will host the 2024 World Cadets Chess Qualifiers from Friday to Sunday, organised by the Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF).
The tournament will feature over 500 young players competing in under-8, under-10, and under-12 categories, with the top six gold medalists earning the right to represent Zimbabwe at the World Cadets Chess Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from September 18 to October 1.
Mercy Mushangwe, a FIDE arbiter and schools’ instructor serving as tournament director, expressed confidence in Zimbabwe’s prospects.
“Given the competitive level expected at this qualifier, we believe our representatives will perform strongly on the global stage,” Mushangwe said.
Selected players will undergo a training camp to prepare for the international event, pending funding availability.
ZCF President Todd Mapingire emphasised the tournament’s broader benefits, including sports tourism and youth development.
“This is an opportunity for our children to gain international exposure, build confidence, and foster global friendships,” he said.
The federation will cover accommodation, meals, and airport transfers for the team in Kazakhstan.
