Ihunde Omunojok and Jemimah Masarira emerged as the under-12 boys’ and girls’ champions at the 2025 Cadets Chess Tournament, held at Haig Park Primary School.
The duo was among over 500 students who competed in the event, which also served as a qualifier for the World Junior Chess Championship scheduled for September in Kazakhstan.
In the boys’ under-12 category, Omunojok claimed victory after seven rounds, finishing ahead of Emanuel Banana and Troy Makuvachuma, who secured second and third place, respectively.
Meanwhile, Masarira triumphed in the girls’ under-12 section, defeating Tafadzwa Chitondo and Sinokuthaba, who took second and third place.
In the under-10 categories, Trey Makuvachuma won the boys’ title, outpacing clubmate Tafadzwa Chinogureyi (second) and Atida Mukono (third).
Among the girls, Natalie Ndoro claimed gold, followed by Mya Mbanje and Princess Ncube in second and third place, respectively.
The under-8 boys’ competition was won by Abdiel Mtakiwa, with Jameson Sakaraboyi and Tinayeishe Nhamburo earning silver and bronze.
In the girls’ under-8 division, Eryna Jain took first place, while Talent Nota and Arebella Mutibvu finished second and third.
The tournament was organised by the Zimbabwe Chess Federation.
