In a powerful example of data-driven healthcare advocacy, Moonlight Funeral Assurance is launching its second annual Cancer Trust Marathon on September 13.
The event, born from a stark analysis of the company’s own claims, represents a strategic shift from managing death to promoting wellness.
“We have noticed that most of the deaths occurring in our book are cancer-related,” stated Dr. Chomi Makina, Moonlight’s Group CEO.
“This marathon is a direct response to that data. Our core business is not death; it is wellness. We would rather invest in a healthy clientele than process a claim.”
The funds raised will provide critical support to cancer treatment initiatives and organisations like the Cancer Trust, offering tangible aid to survivors and those currently in treatment.
The event has garnered significant institutional support, having been inaugurated by the Ministry of Health.
Understanding that wellness is for everyone, the event is designed for maximum inclusivity.
The organisers, working with the National Athletics Board, have established separate competitive categories for children, seniors, and persons with disabilities to ensure broad and fair participation.
“This is a crucial health initiative,” said Dr. Makina.
“It’s about mobilising the entire community, corporates, individuals, and families around the shared goal of prevention, awareness, and support.”
The corporate response has been significant, with major players from across industries—including Liquid Telecom, NMB Bank, Prevail International, and Bank ABC—signed on as partners.
“This collective action highlights a growing commitment within the private sector to address Zimbabwe’s public health challenges head-on,” Moonlight Funeral Assurance public relations manager Noway Museba said.
