HARARE – The Harare City claims it is being owed over ZiG 8 billion by ratepayers, a situation the city fathers say is affecting service delivery.
In a social media update Thursday, the Council said:
“This came out of the latest Debtor’s Age Analysis Report which was presented by Acting Head: Revenue, Alfred Guni during the update meeting on CBD operation on rented accommodation and regularisation of dysfunctional settlements programme in Harare highlighting huge levels of outstanding debt.”
“The City is urging its stakeholders to urgently clear their debts, warning that continued non-payment threatens service delivery and the city’s operational efficiency.
“The City is taking stern measures to recover the debt and urges ratepayers to settle as soon as possible to avoid inconveniences of business closures and residents losing their properties through court orders.
“The bulk of the debt comes from residential property owners who owe the City ZiG5 billion, followed by the commercial sector with ZiG1,09 billion and industry at ZiG1.05 billion.
“Other significant arrears and debts include the Government owing ZiG167 million, ZESA ZiG455 million, dormitory towns ZiG345 million while parastatals owe the City ZiG64 million and sundry with ZWG31 million.
“Additionally, municipal property tenants owe ZiG58 million.”
