Chegutu mine collapse kills seven

Seven artisanal miners were killed when a mine shaft at Alfisha Steward 3 Mine in Chegutu collapsed on Monday.

Preliminary investigations indicate the miners allegedly undercut a high wall, causing earth to cave in and bury them nearly seven metres below the surface.

A joint rescue operation involving local residents and nearby mining companies was swiftly launched.

By Tuesday afternoon, all seven bodies had been retrieved, with two miners rescued alive with minor injuries.

Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister for Mashonaland West Marian Chombo visited the site where she consoled bereaving families.
